FAQ’s

  • Breaking Away Adventures’ mission is to embark on tenacious & immersive moto-camping explorations while showcasing the North American Backcountry. We look forward to sharing our passions for adventure, experience, and Breaking Away from the familiar, and into the unknown.

  • In 2023 & 24, we are hosting adventures in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, and Baja. Future plans include South America, Cuba, Canada, Northeast US, Southeast US.

  • Most of our adventures will be camping or tour oriented, with varying levels and quality of hotels and motels along the way. We will strive to book the best accommodations that are possible, as well as prioritizing Industry and Local business.

  • When staying in hotels, we will book rooms with double occupancy standard, with individual rooms extra. When in remote locations, double might be the only option.

  • Each trip is carefully planned to gather information about everyone’s abilities and their bike’s gas mileage. We will ensure that breaks are taken before gas is needed, as well as communicate throughout the experience to ensure everyone is well rested and takes breaks as needed.

  • Riders should expect to replenish water and basic needs at gas stops along the way. Unless otherwise stated, there will be at least one gas stop daily. Grocery stores, etc. should be visited prior to the tour.

  • Unless otherwise stated, our tours will be low maintenance without a chase truck or additional storage available. Riders should have storage on the bikes that they intend to use or rent for our tours and events.

  • Although the tour lead will have the appropriate GPS routes and paper maps, its always a good idea to do the same personally in case of an incident or getting lost. Map data is available for most tours with Breaking Away.

  • Travel or Trip Insurance is highly recommended. Additionally, by overlapping insurance protections such as; Motorcycle Insurance, AAA coverage, AirMed coverage, and SPOT or InREACH device support, will only help to protect yourself, your bike and your trip. Remember that there is NO SUCH THING as “Full Coverage.”

  • For the majority of our adventures, we operate bare-bones in a 1-2 person operation, or working along-side partners or friends in the community. We thrive on minimalist type adventures that include small and tight knit riding groups, as well as participating in events and programs that benefit the riding industry as a whole.

  • Selected campouts and events will have the option of additional support that can include; Rental Camping Gear, Set-up Service, Camp Chef and more.

  • We follow the seasons and the best times to ride in particular areas. We generally take much of the winter off, though we are always on the hunt to find new adventures in the colder months.

  • Please see our Policies Page for full cancellation information. Bottom line, we want to have fun adventures out of bad weather, though some bad weather is short-lived and exciting. Adventure requires adventurers to be adventurous.

  • Off road knobby’s. At least 50/50. Check out this article from Twisted Throttle.

  • For longer tours and events, we try to choose our starting locations near large airports. Though not all tours are loops, there should not be more than a few hundred miles to the nearest int. airport.

  • Check out our New Trail Ratings Page for full details. Bottom line, most of our adventures are designed for mid-level to experienced riders, two years experience minimum. Why not beginners? Because they still need to experience much of the growing pains that we have already been through. Why not experts? Because many are adrenaline junkies just looking for more challenging routes rather than an entire experience. Hey, more power to them both, and they are welcome to join! Each of our events will be labeled with Trail Ratings and each participant is vetted on their experience to ensure a good fit.

  • How long are the Tours & Events?

In 2024 our trips are in groups of overnighters, weekenders, and 7-10 day-ers.

  • While we love our pets and kids, the nature of our events are just too dangerous. Special exceptions can be made for partners though we wish to keep our events to riders only.

  • For specific events, yes. 4x4’s for the sake of driving instead of riding, nope. Most of our events require a big(ger) bike that is plated.

  • Depending on the event, we strive to find remote campsites, many that are dispersed without any amenities. It's best to plan to not have WiFi, cell reception, running or potable water, or bathrooms.

  • On tours we will have camping planned for the majority of the trip, though there will be hotels in case of weather emergencies, etc. We don’t offer camping and hotels on the same trip.

  • Absolutely. We encourage people from all walks of life to join our adventures!

  • Physical fitness is important for our abilities to maintain our needed energy for 2-14 days of sometimes intense, adventure motorcycle riding. That said, everyone knows themselves best in determining fitness.

  • Heavily dependent on the event, but we attempt to start early and end early, allowing for more time at camp to enjoy each other’s company and the settings, as well as getting in 200-400 miles per day. Night riding is not something we focus on, but night photography is!

  • Legally and as safely as possible within reason. Our groups will ride in staggered formation, staying within the acceptable margins of the speed limit (when & where applicable), stopping for all red and stop signs. Risky behavior of any kind outside of the normal inherent risks and habits, is absolutely discouraged and not allowed on our tours or at events.

  • Contact Us to learn about our Motorcycle Training Partners.

  • We don’t rent bikes, but work with partners who might offer discounts.

  • Refer to our Standards and Gear Page, but ideally big bikes, BMW, KTM, Triumph Adventure bikes are the way to go for most of our tours. You can’t beat the versatility with luggage capacity, mileage and endurance. Some dual sports work as well for certain events.

  • Normally, when we arrive. We will be watching weather patterns ahead of time, but there could be mud and sand wherever we go.

  • Make sure that you pack along some self accountability. Remember, this is an adventure motorcycle trip. Between mechanical issues, weather anomalies, and distracted drivers; anything can happen. Know where the closest repair shops are in relation to the tour. Know your insurance levels, increase where needed. Contact Us for any and all questions and concerns BEFORE the event, and we’ll do our best to answer or point you in the right direction.
