How it Works
Not all dreams are built with white picket fences, commuter traffic and weekend bbq’s. Some of us were born to explore, wander and lose ourselves in the journey. This constant pull to detach from the city and break away from the dull normality of our daily routines is what sparked the idea for Breaking Away Adventures. Borrowing from the spirit, and paying homage to the film, ‘Breaking Away,’ is the essence of what we are attempting to create; a community of adventure seekers not only in search of heart-pounding excitement, but of fulfillment and meaning. Most of our (current) adventures are motorcycle based, which is our preferred method of injecting tenacity into the journey, and enjoying the experience from start to finish while also taking on the challenge of doing it on two wheels.
Why Breaking Away?
Most Adventure Companies offer only one way to join in… pay lots of money. While there are always costs associated with providing a service, we are most interested in building a collective of like minded people to share in the adventures and eventually pass it on to the next generation. With that in mind, we offer varied costs and packages for all Breaking Away Adventures in order to involve adventurers in all income levels.
Where do we go?
Our adventures are mainly based out of Northern California, New Mexico, and the American Southwest with occasional trips to further away states, Baja and countries. While most trips are off-road camping based, we also offer same-day local sight-seeing and food tours, tenacious trips that involve dual sports, (skydiving, cycling, hiking, skiing, etc), National Parks, baseball ballpark tours, and more.

Founder & Owner, Matt Hoffman-Beals
East coast born, West coast raised, and a nomadic life lived across the country, my life has always been immersed in discovery and adventure. After building a career in hospitality and event management over two decades, I took this wide range of skills to forge a new path from bars & restaurants and into adventure focused travel on motorbikes.
I love sharing in the experience of new sights, destinations and activities, whether it is exploring on and off-road, going to sports and special events, traveling abroad, and seeking out new friends & communities.
The goal of Breaking Away is to generate amazing exploration and experiences for tenacious riders from around the country and the world; immersed in the wonder and beauty that thrives on the roads less travelled.
What I Ride…
My current bike of choice, is a 2014 BMW GS1200, that I have lovingly named Aunt Margaret, after a long-ago past Great Aunt that well, just kept on going.
Once she moves on to the GS Graveyard in the sky, a brand spanking new GSA will be in my future. Why, you might ask? I like to eat up miles so that I can enjoy the areas that I am exploring. When traveling solo, I’ll put in 500-800 miles in a day if it extends my time at my destinations. The comfort, ability and gas mileage have a huge part to play in that.
Not to mention how far this bike can take me off-road, in my mind, there just isn’t a better bike for Adventuring.
